Once again, with no championship at stake, the Miami Heat simply couldn’t beat the Dallas Mavericks. Dirk Nowitzki scored 30 points on 12-for-14 shooting, Jason Terry scored 20 and Jason Kidd finished with 11 assists as the Mavericks beat the Heat for the ninth straight time in the regular season, 111-96 on Saturday night.

The Dallas Stars rolled to a quick 3-0 lead. Yet coach Dave Tippett was more impressed with what happened after that. James Neal scored two goals and Dallas rolled to an early advantage, weathered a Columbus comeback, and then pulled away again Saturday night for a 7-3 win, the Stars’ fourth victory in a row.

Michael Beasley had a season for the ages for Kansas State. Denis Clemente made his mark with a game the Wildcats won’t soon forget. The Kansas State guard tied Beasley’s year-old Big 12 single-game record with 44 points, leading the Wildcats to an 85-81 overtime upset of No. 11 Texas on Saturday. Beasley was an All-American as a freshman last season before turning pro.

The Montreal Canadiens caught all the late breaks to snap their longest losing streak of the season. Saku Koivu’s power-play goal with 22.3 seconds remaining gave Montreal a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday. That came after Christopher Higgins drew the Canadiens even with 1:53 left. Koivu scored off a scramble in front of goalie Jonathan Quick.
